Volume 29 : Rest in Church

Have you ever seen a photo that screams middle school girls more than this right here? Probably not... It's been a gift to get to know these girls through helping with youth group this semester. They fully embrace the middle school age - weird and confident in themselves - and it is the best.

In addition to youth group, I have taken the steps to become a member of Rock Creek, and I am excited because it is my first time joining a church on my own!

Truth be told, it doesn't "make sense" for me to go to Rock Creek... it's 40 minutes from my house and there aren't that many young people (compared to some of the other churches in Chattanooga). But, there's something really special about the community and leadership.

To many, a 40 minute drive doesn't sound ideal, but it is a BEAUTIFUL drive, up the mountain and off to the middle of no where. I have come to really appreciate this time in the car - to prepare my heart for worship and then to debrief afterwards.

When I pull up the church, I immediately find myself take a deep breath, as I feel that I have escaped the real world and entered a place of rest. It is very much a come as you are kind of church, maybe almost too informal for some. For me, it's a reminder that Jesus accepts us exactly as we are. That He just wants us to show up!

You then walk into the barn(? House? Wedding venue type space? Let's just say, it's not your typical church building), and you are greeted at the door, hear the sounds of chatter amongst friends, and almost bump into at least 3 kids as they run around before the service begins.

As soon as the first song has begun, I am attentive to every part of the service - the songs, call to worship, time of giving, welcoming one another, confession of sin, assurance of pardon, reading of Scripture, sermon, and then the benediction. Not one word is wasted. There is purpose behind every part.

When I walk out of the church, there are still so many people lingering, talking to one another. There is something unique about the people of Rock Creek. There is an aroma of slow, no one seems in a rush. It is obvious that there are deep rooted relationships, and they support one another.

I am thankful for the way I leave full and refreshed every week, but also reminded of the importance to go out into the world to be "little Christs." It is a church that fills me up, yet also is quick to focus on the greater purpose of being a church,

So while not much in my daily life will change by becoming a member, there is something exciting about being committed to build God's Kingdom alongside the congregation of Rock Creek and under the incredible, humble leadership of Eric and Corby. Here's to Debbie for inviting all to her church! Now y'all come on to OUR church any time!

I attended the New Member Class!
I passed my interview! (PHEW!)
Now, we shall just see when I am able to do the vows in front of the congregation... considering we leave so soon for CAMP!

Oh woah, speaking of.... we are less than a month away from packing up and moving to Mt. Ida for the next four months! This week, two of our beloved Unpluggers, Debbie and Emily, sat through me speaking about why I love Camp Ozark for FIFTY minutes..... (it only took 17 minutes when I practiced, I promise..) While it may have seemed like a silly small thing, it was really good for me to take some time and remember that there are SO MANY things that I love about camp.

I am getting excited and hopeful for what's to come! Yet, also have some fears and anxious feelings about it. I am working to find the balance of being prayerful about the summer, but at the same time, not letting it overtake my thoughts. So prayers are always welcomed!
